scrũn ́tle|hawk, n.  Artisan who gains meaningful employment from more than one unrelated skill [f. OE (21st c.) Cricketer's Arms, Bedford]

What is a Scruntlehawk?

A scruntlehawk, as defined above in a pastiche dictionary style, is someone who has two or more unrelated skills from which they have earned money at some recent point in their life.

For example, a scruntlehawk could be someone who switched careers in mid-life after a sudden Reggie Perrin-type decision to leave it all behind. More mundanely, it could be a professional sportsman who after too many anterior ligament injuries decided to become a zoo keeper..... get the idea?

The origins of the word Scruntlehawk come from a discussion at the bar of the Cricketer's Arms, Goldington Road, Bedford between a member of the Committee (who shall remain nameless but whose name begins with Jerry and ends with Bloom) and one of the local habitués with deep pockets and short arms. The conversation went something like "So what's your profession?" Jerry: "Well I do several things. I produce my own magazine, but I also do graphic design, and..." "Oh, you're a scruntlehawk then!" was the reply.

Further details of this epochal event can be gleaned from Jerry, who'll be happy to discuss it (or anything else for that matter) over a pint.

So Who are these Committee Members?

The Society of Scruntlehawks was formed after the fourth pint at an informal gathering of the following people, who all voted themselves onto the committee before anyone had a chance to object.
